A “United” Jerusalem? Geopolitical tour

The city of Jerusalem is known by many descriptions – among them “a united Jerusalem”. Indeed, after 19 years of separation, West and East Jerusalem were united in 1967; the fence separating Israel and Jordan was dismantled, and a border no longer runs through the city center.

Ir Amim’s tour is held in collaboration

with the Konrad Adenauer Israel Foundation. The city of Jerusalem is known by many descriptions – among them “a united Jerusalem”. Indeed, after 19 years of separation, West and East Jerusalem were united in 1967; the fence separating Israel and Jordan was dismantled, and a border no longer runs through the city center. But is Jerusalem actually a united city? Everyday reality suggests that perhaps, this is not the case. In this tour, we will get to know the reality of life in East Jerusalem. We will learn about the changing borders of the city and its residents – whose notable majority are not citizens of the State of Israel. We will hear about possibilities and barriers to an agreed political future and we will examine this in light of the great tension in the city. We will discuss aspects of historical, political, general, and social developments from '67 to the present day; We will delve into current issues such as the route of the Separation Barrier - how it epitomizes Israeli policy and influences the city – and see how settlements and national parks within Palestinian neighborhoods affect the life of the residents. Ultimately, we will speak of East Jerusalem of today and of the possibilities and hopes for its future. This tour offers a wide discussion on the policies of the Israeli government in the city of Jerusalem and the consequences of these policies on future political arrangements. It will shed light on both Israeli society and its democracy. However, this discussion can only take place after understanding what’s happening on the ground and the different sides involved in the issues. We invite you to come to get to know Jerusalem and its core issues in depth. The tour will last for about 5 hours and is a combination of bus travel and instruction throughout Israeli and Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, with a number of stops at important lookout points throughout the city. In addition, there is a short walking tour in Sheikh Jarrah and, if permitted, a meeting with some activists. We will meet at 9 am at the parking lot of Gan Hapa’amon (Liberty Bell Park), where we will likewise complete the tour at about 1 pm. *Some lookout points don’t have shade, so please bring hats and water Tour Guide: Shai Goren, Activist, and Teacher of history and citizenship. The tour will take place in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Israel Foundation For more details and questions, please contact Yael Moav at 054-443-6347
